So, What Exactly is the Difference Between a State and a Commonwealth?

I'm guessing there used to be, but is there anymore? I'm in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which is one of four commonwealths in the U.S. (Kentucky, Machusetts and Virginia?), and I was just curious if there's anything besides the name that's different.
